Naturally Dyed Easter Eggs

Monday, March 31, 2014

I am so excited for this week.  I spent the entire weekend working on 4 blog posts!  Three of which are Easter related and that I will feature this week for the Easter Holiday.  All of the posts that I will do this week are new for me so I was very exited to try them out and see how it went!  I thought it would be fitting to start with a natural recipe for dying the eggs.

I first learned of this method while in college.  My roommate of several years would always come back each year with beautifully died eggs using tea and herbs.  I then saw a few different versions of this on Pinterest so I just had to give it a try this year!  This is so simple that all I had to do was grab a couple of extra items while doing my weekly grocery shopping.  A dozen of white eggs, blueberries and a couple of packages of herbs, one of which was a verity pack was all I needed.

INGREDIENTS:
  • 2 tea bags (passion fruit/red)
  • 1 carton blueberries
  • 2 cartons herbs (1 verity pack/1 dill)
  • 1 dozen white eggs
  • 1 pkg knee high stockings

METHOD:
  1. Buy a package of knee high stockings for a few dollars at a convince store or even at a grocery store or if you have a couple of old ones 2 is all you really need.
  2. This is the most tricky part of the whole process… trying to get the herbs to lay on the egg within the stockings.  Once you get it how you want it make sure you tie the stocking so that it is very snug over the eggs.
  3. Depending on how many different colors you want to do should determine how many eggs you fit in a stocking.  I wanted to try 2 colors although they turned out to be pretty much the same in the end result.
  4. In 2 sauce pans fill up until water is about an inch above the eggs.  Place 2 passion fruit tea bags in one and a few handfuls of blueberries in the other.  Along with one stocking of eggs in each.
  5. Boil the eggs for about 30 minutes.
  6. Leave the eggs in the pans for another 2 hours after removing from the heat.  If you would like this can be in the fridge.
  7. The remove the eggs and let dry (aprox. 1 hour).  (Again you can do this by leaving them in the fridge if it make you feel better about eating them later.)
  8. Cut the stockings off, remove the herbs and enjoy your beautiful eggs!
