Peppermint Bullet Proof Coffee

Here I am on another Sunday night just working on my lovely blog post for this week.  First off I just wanted to stay thanks to my readers for the amount of views I've been getting in the past couple of weeks!  It makes me feel all giddy with excitement because I'm actually somewhat popular (which has never happened before…especially in high school! haha).  Most importantly though I'm glad people are finding what I hope they consider some great tasting recipes to try at home!

I actually have finished all of my photos for my 3 posts this week ahead of time; which rarely happens.  I was just editing them all when I came across the last set which will be used in this post.  I was so excited while editing and looking through them because they just look so good to me.  Gasp! Trust me I am my biggest critic sso you will not hear me say that very often.

This recipe is actually a special of Adam's so I will turn the blog over to him to write the ingredients and directions.  We decided at his suggestion to take some step by step photos which yes I will admit it was pretty intelligent of him!  This recipe is the type where you don't really measure the ingredients and it turns out slightly different each and every time.  In going with a slightly different format for this post you will see a rough estimate for what ratio ingredients should be for 1 cup of coffee.

I'm guessing that those who read this that are not specifically searching for bullet proof coffee recipes will be taken aback by this.  I know I was when Adam told me he wanted to try butter in his coffee!  We've been having our coffee this way for quite some time now and it turns out quite well.

We practice intermittent fasting on weekdays so in the mornings we skip breakfast and have this instead.  The fats allow the coffee to be much more filling that just plain black coffee but without breaking our "fast."  They also provide the benefit of allowing the liver to produce ketones which act as a great energy source for the mind and body. On top of that, the MCT oil has a thermogenic effect which means that it promotes fat burning! The peppermint is more so for my sake because I still do not like the taste of just plain black coffee.  We also have a few other variations that entail spices like cinnamon, almond and/or vanilla.

This recipe isn't 100% "bullet proof coffee" because that is a specific product/process and trademarked by a guy named Dave Asprey. Dave has his own website, The Bullet Proof Executive, and you can learn more about the original Bullet Proof Coffee from here. He would definitely say this isn't a true bullet proof coffee because we do not use his brand of beans or MCT oil…but we both use the same brand of butter! Nevertheless, you can still get a lot of the same potential health benefits as the original by following this recipe!

INGREDIENTS:
  • 8 oz. Brewed Coffee as Desired
  • ~1/8 tsp. Peppermint Extract
  • 1 tbsp. unsalted grassfed/pasture-raised butter (We use Kerrygold Butter)
  • 1-2 tsp. MCT Oil (Medium Chain Triglyceride Oil)
  • 1 tsp. Stevia or Xylitol (optional, if you need it to be sweet)

METHOD:
  1. Start brewing the coffee, there are pros and cons to every brewing method so just go with whatever you like the best or have available. You might want to consider brewing it on the stronger side because the butter and oil can dilute the coffee flavor a bit.
  2. While the coffee is brewing add your peppermint, butter, and MCT oil to your cup or travel mug. You can also add the stevia or xylitol now if desired.
  3. Once the coffee is brewed, pour the coffee into the cup until the container is about half-full, going half full prevents splashing or spillage while mixing.
  4. Use a hand-frother (we use a cheap frother made by Aerolatte) or blender (louder, messier and more cleanup required) to mix for 20-30 seconds or until the oil and butter have mixed to a frothy or foamy top. It should look similar to a latte.
  5. Top off the rest of your coffee cup, sit back, sip and relax.
  6. Enjoy!!
